From the Official McPherson County History

“Life in McPherson County has not always been on the “quiet peaceful side of life”. The county was organized in 1890, prior to this time the counties of Arthur, which was a part of McPherson County, Grant, Hooker, and Thomas, were all part of an unorganized territory. This territory brought in quite a population of fugitives from justice. The year of 1890 Governor Thayer appointed Albert R. Mayer as the first sheriff of McPherson County, as he saw a need for some law and order.” 1
